A Childhood on Hold

At just nine years old, Anita is more caregiver than child. Living in poverty in rural Albania, she looks after her younger brother every day while her mother works. Anita's father became violent, forcing the family to separate. Unfortunately, like many families in Albania, life is a constant struggle, and childcare is far beyond their means.

Anita's days are filled with responsibilities, and she often feels isolated. "She's so reserved," said Arjana, Mission Without Borders' local family worker. "She feels cut off from other children."

A Week That Changed Everything

It was only when Mission Without Borders began supporting the family through our Sponsorship Program that Anita finally received the care she so urgently needed—and new opportunities began to open up.

When Anita was invited to summer camp, she wasn't sure she could go. With daily chores and responsibilities at home and a reluctant mother, it felt out of reach. But Arjana, knowing how much it meant to Anita, encouraged her mother to consider how important it was for Anita to experience rest and joy—just like any other child. When her mother finally agreed, Anita was thrilled and beamed with excitement.

I'm happy I came to camp. I loved the sea, the different games, the great food, the Bible stories, and the new friends I made. Anita

Camp began with uncertainty. "She felt shy and overwhelmed," Arjana recalled. But by the end of the first day, something had shifted. "Her eyes started to shine with the joy she experienced each day… she laughed, danced, and ran to swim in the sea."

A New Spark of Joy

Anita's transformation was clear to everyone. "She seemed happier and more responsible," her mother said when she returned.

Anita even received a special certificate as the best girl at camp. She now dreams of returning next year.

"Children like Anita need this," Arjana said. "Camp shows them they are loved and valued."

Every child is precious and deserves to know they are worthy of fun, care, and love.
