From Homelessness to Hope: Maria's Story
Maria never imagined that at 66 years old she would be living on the streets. Rejected and overwhelmed by loss, she felt completely alone. Then God began to rewrite her story through Street Mercy.26th July 2026
From a Comfortable Life to the Streets
You never imagine that one day you could be homeless.
Your life is planned out. You have a home, financial security, family, and a future that feels certain.
Then, in an instant, everything changes. Your husband is killed in a tragic car accident while you are behind the wheel. As you grieve, your daughter blames you for his death, and the family and friends you once relied on turn away from you. Suddenly, you find yourself completely alone. This is Maria's story.
Life on the Streets
Maria spent most of her life in Sofia, Bulgaria. After losing her job following the collapse of communism, she and her husband started a small business together and built a life for their family.
But when her husband was killed in the car accident, her world fell apart. Rejected by her daughter who out of anger put her out of their home, Maria found herself alone on the streets.
At 66, Maria never imagined she would be sleeping on park benches and collecting bottles just to survive.
One terrible day, Maria fell and broke her leg in the snow, she found herself alone, in pain, and overwhelmed by grief. It felt as if she had reached the end of the road.
But God was not finished with her story.
Finding Hope Through Street Mercy
Around that time, Maria was introduced to Street Mercy, Mission Without Borders' programme for people experiencing homelessness.
Maria began attending Bible readings hosted by our Street Mercy Project, and as she listened to God's Word, she realised her need for a Saviour.
Her life would never be the same again.
"The warm soup saved my life, as well as the warm clothes, the shoes and the medicine when I needed it. But most of all," she said, "my heart was touched by the care and love you showed me."Maria
Maria discovered that God was her hope, and that even in her darkest circumstances, He had not abandoned her.
Answered Prayers
Maria longed for her relationship with her daughter to be restored.
Over time, God began answering that prayer. While her daughter was not immediately ready to welcome her home, she allowed Maria to spend time with her two granddaughters.
Another answer to prayer came when Maria found work at a hospital. For someone who had been unemployed for years, it felt like a miracle.
A New Beginning
Then came an answer to prayer beyond anything Maria could have imagined. Her daughter's heart softened, and she welcomed her Mother back into her home. With tears in her eyes, Maria shared:
"God heard my prayers and now my life is different. I'd like to thank Mission Without Borders for the support, love and care you showed me in the darkest years of my life. I will never forget the loving attitude and kindness I received through the Street Mercy project."
What if you could bring this same hope to someone like Maria who is living on the streets
