Growing Up Too Fast in Ukraine

Nine-year-old Davyd lives with his mother and three younger brothers in Rivne, Ukraine. Since his father left for Poland before the war began and hasn't been back since, life has been incredibly hard for them all.

The family shares a small part of an aging house, with few toys and almost no space to play. Like many children growing up in poverty, Davyd has faced adult-sized challenges far too early.

So, when Davyd and his brother Volodymyr were invited to Mission Without Borders' summer camp, their excitement was through the roof.

A Week of Wonder

Summer camp was like stepping into another world. The theme was Alice in Wonderland, and the programme was packed with games, sports, Bible lessons, and creative activities—all offered in a safe, loving environment.

It's my first time here, and I like this camp very much. It's a beautiful place with a forest and lake. Davyd

Davyd shared excitedly, "We have comfortable rooms with a shower and toilet... The food is so tasty that I always ask for extra portions."

He beamed as he talked about Arthur, his group leader: "Arthur is very kind… He takes care of us; he counts us to make sure we’re all there. He tells interesting stories whenever we ask him, and helps us clean our rooms and keep our clothes and shoes tidy. Every day he helps us with everything!"

A Life-Changing Encounter with God's Love

Summer camp left Davyd with memories he'll treasure forever—and a deep impression of God's love.

"I learned about God: that He loves everyone: adults and children… He loves you no matter what," Davyd shared. "Also, I discovered that God knows and sees ahead what will happen next."

As war continues to overshadow daily life in Ukraine, summer camps offer not just escape, but healing and hope. Camp coordinator Maksym said, "Children hear the good news that they're not abandoned, that they are valuable, and someone cares for them. This is how we fight for good."

Give a child the chance to be carefree, joyful, and loved.
