Children in Need of Love and Care

When the Mission Without Borders Ukraine team visited a children’s home in Pluzhne, students from a local theological seminary joined them.

Many children in state care were already vulnerable before the war began. Some live with special physical and learning needs, relying on consistent routines, therapy, medication, and skilled caregivers to help them grow and feel secure.

War does not simply interrupt this fragile stability — it magnifies every gap in care, every shortage, every emotional wound. Medical support becomes harder to access. Familiar staff may leave. Fear and uncertainty intensify for children who already struggle to process change.

Oksana, the Mission’s Christian outreach coordinator, explained, “Another important aspect of these kinds of visits is to give emotional support to children who are somewhat socially isolated. We show them love and acceptance and take an interest in their lives to help them understand how valued they are.”

Children sing and act out a song together.

During the visit, children sang, played games, and joined in friendly competitions. They heard about Jesus as the One who gives life, freedom, and a future. Each child received a sweet treat and an invitation to join the Mission’s Bible Correspondence Course — an opportunity to continue learning and growing in faith.

Bringing Joy and Faith to Every Child

“The children were open and interested,” Oksana said. “Most expressed so much joy while we were there. We didn’t see any indifference, even from the older students. The younger ones hugged the volunteers and didn’t want to let them go.”

For children whose routines have been disrupted and whose world feels uncertain, simple moments of attention matter deeply. Songs became laughter. Games became connection. A story about Jesus became reassurance that their lives have purpose and value.

But the Mission’s goal is not a single afternoon of happiness.

A classroom of children joyfully hug each other.

“We don't want to have one-time events. We want to impact the children's faith and development throughout their entire time at this children’s home.”

Through Bible studies, summer camps, and regular visits, the team builds relationships that restore stability, belonging, and hope — the very things war has threatened to take away.

A Calling

For Eugeniya, an 18-year-old student from the theological seminary visiting the children’s home, the day became deeply personal.

“My heart ached because I realized that these children are deprived of what they need most. They don’t have someone to tell them how beautiful they are, to encourage them, comfort them, hug them and sing them a lullaby.”

In that moment, the need was no longer abstract. It had faces. Small hands. Quiet longing.

A young girl smiles as Eugeniya kneels, takes her hand, and speaks to her.

“The thought that these children, like all people, are valuable to the Lord comforts me,” Eugeniya, said. “At the same time, I realise that I have to do what God is calling me to do on my part.”

That calling is not only for those who visit.

Oksana added, “This kind of partnership is very fruitful for everyone.” Yet there are still not enough workers — and not enough resources — to meet the growing needs inside these homes.

Children with special physical and learning needs cannot navigate war alone.

With your support, they can receive consistent care, emotional encouragement, and opportunities to grow in faith and confidence.

Your commitment today will help bring stability, love, and lasting hope to these vulnerable children.
