When Survival Comes First, Learning Falls Behind

Many children in Ukraine arrive at fourth grade unable to read or write. Volunteer Alisa explains, “There are quite a few children… about 10 years old – and they don’t yet know the alphabet and can’t write.”

Ten-year-old Vlad was close to dropping out of school. At home, neglect, instability, and parents struggling with addiction left him alone for long stretches, unsupported and afraid. Maria, the centre director, said, “They live in very poor conditions… All of the children fell behind in their development.”

Without encouragement, security, or anyone who believes in them, children like Vlad lose confidence, fall further behind, and begin to withdraw from the world around them.

A Place Filled With Safety, Attention, and Love

The After School programme, run in partnership with Life Church, has become Vlad's refuge—a warm, structured space where he feels seen, supported, and safe.

Alisa shared, “At home, he spends most of his time alone… Here, he has friends and a place that’s filled with attention and activity.”

At the programme, Vlad receives help with reading and writing, enjoys meals, Bible lessons, and finds caring role models who listen without judgement. Slowly, he is opening up—laughing more, trusting others, and believing he can learn.

I’ve made friends here. Vlad

“Here I was taught to write letters and read… When I’m older, I want to be a volunteer at the centre,” he shared.

The centre nurtures self-worth as much as academics. Once closed off, Vlad now expresses emotions, shares his experiences, and takes pride in his progress.

Where Children Grow, Heal, and Discover Their Potential

For children affected by neglect and trauma, nurturing relationships and stable routines are life-changing. As Maria explains, “A lack of care and love from their parents is so damaging… They need a place where they receive safety and love.”

With caring mentors and individual attention, children begin to believe in their abilities, develop confidence, and rediscover joy in learning.
