A Cut Above Poverty: How Self-Sufficiency Changed Todor's Future

In Krupnik, Bulgaria, many Roma families face significant challenges. Poverty, discrimination, and limited access to education often leave people with few opportunities to secure stable employment. As a result, families can become trapped in a cycle of hardship that passes from one generation to the next.
For Todor, 32, life had become increasingly difficult. He lived with his wife, Elmira, their three children, and his parents in a shared home. Financial pressure weighed heavily on the family, and the strain on their relationship had become so severe that Todor and Elmira were close to divorce.
When the family joined Mission Without Borders' family sponsorship programme, they began receiving practical, emotional, and spiritual support through regular visits from staff member Emil.
As Emil got to know Todor, he recognised something important: Todor had a remarkable talent for hairdressing. What he lacked was the opportunity and resources to turn that talent into a sustainable livelihood.
Through a Mission Without Borders self-sufficiency project, Todor received the equipment and support needed to establish his own business. Today, he rents and operates a salon that has been furnished and equipped through the project, enabling him to earn a steady income and support his family.
"I can tell you that in this whole region there isn't a hairdresser who is better than Todor. People travel from surrounding areas to have their hair cut by him, especially for weddings and special occasions."Emil
The self-sufficiency project did more than create a source of income. It restored dignity, stability, and hope for the future. Instead of struggling to survive, Todor now has the opportunity to provide for his family through his own hard work and skills.
Alongside this practical transformation came a spiritual one. Through the support and encouragement of Emil and the local church, Todor renewed his relationship with God and committed his life to Christ.
"I was one of those people who needed a push to wake up again and turn to God," Todor said. "Emil encouraged me to seek the Lord again, and I will always be grateful for that."
Today, Todor's faith is visible throughout his salon. Bible verses decorate the walls, often sparking conversations with customers.
"Most of my clients ask me if I am a Christian when they read the verses," he explained. "That gives me an opportunity to tell them about Jesus and share my testimony."
The impact of self-sufficiency reaches far beyond financial stability. Through this project, Todor has gained the confidence to support his family, strengthen his marriage, serve his community, and share the hope he has found in Christ.
