How summer camp helps every child feel valued

Every Child Known by Name
Many children living in special needs residential care homes in Ukraine have grown up facing challenges that most children never experience. While some have parents and families who care deeply for them, living in a residential setting means staff must divide their time and attention among many children. As a result, some children long for more individual encouragement, patience and reassurance that they are valued.
For Ruslan, who coordinates Mission Without Borders summer camps for these children, creating a different experience is the goal.
Each child is known by name. Counsellors spend time listening to their stories, encouraging them and helping them see their value. Through games, sports, crafts, songs and outdoor activities, children can simply enjoy being children again.
But the true impact goes beyond fun activities. The camp creates opportunities for children to receive personal attention and build meaningful relationships with caring adults. Through simple conversations, encouragement and time spent together, children experience the patience, kindness and unconditional care that every child needs to thrive.
A Safe Place During War
The need for this support has become even greater during the war in Ukraine. Many children carry emotional wounds from loss, displacement, uncertainty and constant stress. Air-raid sirens and fear have become part of everyday life.
Camp offers something many of these children desperately need: a safe place to laugh, build friendships and experience acceptance. Just as importantly, staff and volunteers share the message of God’s love, helping children explore questions about faith, hope and their future.
Seeds of Hope for the Future
The impact of camp often lasts far beyond one week. Ruslan and his team regularly see children leave with renewed confidence, greater joy and a deeper understanding of their worth. Some begin attending church, while others continue exploring faith and reading the Bible.
As Ruslan explains, even a short time filled with care and encouragement can plant lasting seeds of hope.
