From Fear to Uncertainty

When Mia* first joined Mission Without Borders’ family sponsorship programme, she was raising four children in poverty in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her life was shaped by fear, isolation, and uncertainty.

Like many in her country, Mia carried the legacy of war. Though the conflict ended decades ago, its effects linger in families—where trauma, instability, and silence are often passed down through generations. In her community, opportunities were scarce, and many women are trapped in difficult and unsafe situations.

For Mia, leaving was not simple. Dependent on her husband and with few resources, she faced daily challenges while trying to care for her children. Her home offered little sense of safety, and hope felt distant.

A Relationship That Changed Everything

When Mia met Sandra, her Mission Without Borders family worker, she found more than practical support—she found someone she could trust.

At first, Mia shared very little, simply asking for prayer. Soon after, her husband left, marking a painful yet pivotal turning point.

“There were many changes in our lives in a short period, but one of the things that I’m thankful for the most is the friend that I've got in Sandra. I feel like she’s the sister that I never had. She’s been by my side through it all, and it was much easier to face all the changes with her care and support.”

With ongoing support, the family received essentials like clothing, school supplies, and opportunities for the children to attend summer camp. Just as importantly, Mia gained encouragement, stability, and someone to walk alongside her.

A Future Rewritten Through Support

As trust grew, so did Mia’s confidence. For the first time, she began to consider her own dreams. One small but meaningful wish—to visit the Spring of the Bosnia River—was fulfilled through Sandra’s kindness, reminding Mia that she, too, matters.

Today, Mia’s family is in a safer place, growing in stability and hope. Their story shows that change is possible when someone walks alongside a family with care and consistency.
