Man holds out a piece of broken bread

Day 5 - Follow Jesus’ example

Renewed Within: At The Last Supper

Humble Service

'When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his Master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.'
John 13:12-17 ESV

In this powerful moment, Jesus, Lord and Teacher, stoops low to wash His disciples' feet. This act turns the world's ideas of greatness upside down. The Master does not demand to be served; instead, He serves. And then He calls us to do the same.

Jesus' humble act is not merely symbolic; it reveals His heart, a heart of love, forgiveness, and self-giving. When we follow Him, we are called to reflect that same humility in our relationships and service. Serving others, even in the small, unseen ways, is obedience to Christ's example and promise. And Jesus assures us: we are blessed when we do it, not for recognition, but because the Holy Spirit works humility and love within us.

Micah 6:8 reminds us: "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"

True humility begins with receiving Jesus' cleansing, His forgiveness and grace, and flows outward into how we treat others. As the Apostle Paul urges us:

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."
Philippians 2:3 ESV

So, let us examine our hearts:

  • Are we ready to serve without needing praise?

  • Are we willing to wash the feet of those around us in humility, kindness, forgiveness, and love?

Jesus washed us with the washing of water by the word (Eph_5:26), let us be mindful to use the same "water" in ministering to others.

May we not only understand Christ's teaching but live it. May our lives be marked by humble service, following the model of the Lord Jesus, the Servant-King.

When Faith Moves Us to Serve

Jesus didn’t just teach about serving others—He lived it. Time and again, at Mission Without Borders, we see that example reflected in people like Maksym. Having faced loss and hardship himself, he chose not to turn inward, but to serve others with compassion and faith. His story shows what it means to follow Christ—bringing practical help, hope, and the love of Jesus to places marked by pain.

If this devotion inspired you to serve with humility, consider sharing it with someone who may be encouraged.
